GUTEMA School project
The Objective: The Gutema School complex consists of a primary and secondary school. The school buildings are completely run down, there is no roof on the walls, the children have to sit on bamboo-sticks as there are no benches, teachers are unpaid and there is no library or any sanitary provisions, but nevertheless the children come to school because they want to study. CAF wants to support this school by creating an ongoing and sustainable source of income. This way they will not only be able to do immediate and urgent repair works to their buildings, it will allow them to create a long-term source of income for improving the school environment.
The Opportunity: Article 26 of the Declaration of Human Rights states "Everyone has the right to education". The local community that supports this school tries to provide this right to the best of their abilities. With CAF's support, the children will be able to study in an improved environment.
The Solution: CAF intends to reinforce the school's income-generating activities, namely gardening. The school will invest in a piece of farm land on which they will grow vegetables. With the income of the sales of these vegetables, the school will be able to do the necessary repair works. By reinforcing and further developing these existing activities, we will fulfill CAF's mission, namely:
- to improve the health and education of children in impoverished communities (supporting a run-down school)
- in ways that respect the environment, through sustainable projects identified as priorities by local children, parents and community members (agricultural projects)
Cost: € 3000 will be put into immediate repairs (construction of a roof) and into the gardening project.
