Three-step relief programme for tsunami victims

Three-step relief programme for tsunami victims

Who?
Children Are the Future (CAF), a Brussels-based charity (ASBL), is joining forces with MAEGA Trust, a South-Indian NGO, to reach out a helping hand to the families worst affected by the terrible tsunami disaster which hit the southeast Indian coastline on December 26th 2004.

What?
In order to help families harmed by the tsunami, CAF has provided assistance through a three-step relief programme to two of the many villages affected by this disaster. As a first step, CAF provided emergency relief by distributing food packages to all the families within these two villages assuring that all the families got a daily ration of food to cover their basic nutritional needs. The second step consisted of providing villagers with the healthcare and psychological counseling necessary for them to cope with this terrible disaster. In a third stage, CAF is currently providing the villagers with the financial and logistical support to start or resume an income-generating activity, and as such, provide for themselves on an ongoing basis into the future.

Why?
On December 26th 2004, a terrible tsunami hit the southeast coastline of India. More than 8,800 people are confirmed dead in mainland India, 7,968 of them in Tamil Nadu. Thousands more are still missing as a result of this disaster.

Beneficiaries
In cooperation with a local NGO, MAEGA Trust, CAF has identified 450 families in two fishing villages who are amongst the people most in need of our help. All of these families have lost their livelihood and many of them have lost one or several family members. Despite their difficult situation, some of these families have integrated tsunami orphans into their families and homes, and thus need extra financial support to be able to provide for the children and send them to school.

Where?
The selected fishing villages are located on the outskirts of Madras/Chennai, the state capital of Tamil Nadu, which is located in the southeastern corner of India. CAF will focus on the villages CAF of Devanerikuppam and Karikattukuppam.

Oversight and Quality Improvement.
CAF Belgium is serving as a quality/accountability review board for the project, while the CAF Local Community Advisory Council based in Tamil Nadu provides additional, local quality oversight.

Cost.
A total of € 32,230 has been raised to cover the three-stage relief programme for 450 families. CAF has raised this budget through a number of fundraising events and through the kind contributions of individual personas and associations. Once the three-stage relief package has been properly implemented CAF will assess the situation in the field and raise further funds if we believe there is a need for it.
