Science and computer lab for orphans with polio, India
Who? Children Are the Future (CAF), a Brussels-based nonprofit (asbl), has agreed to finance a project from the Society of Daughters of Mary Immaculate and Collaborators (DMI) to establish a science and computer laboratory for orphans with polio in Ottanthangal, Tamil Nadu, India. DMI is an India-registered voluntary institution that provides a variety of social services.
What? DMI seeks to create a science and computer laboratory to allow the orphans with polio who are in their care to complete their science and computer education.
Why? DMI provides food, clothing, shelter and overall care for 60 disabled orphans in their Ottanthangal institution. The women running the orphanage currently provide educational support up to high school age. However, the students in higher classes require laboratory facilities in order to complete their practical studies, which will enable them to obtain jobs after discharge from the institution.
Where? Ottanthangal is a remote village about sixty kilometers from Chennai (Madras) in the state of Tamil Nadu in the southeastern corner of India. Fifty-two percent (52%) of the 26 million people who live in Tamil Nadu, India live below the poverty line. Conservative estimates indicate that 3,000,000 children in Tamil Nadu are involved in labor including hazardous industries. An additional 300,000 children live on the streets.
Cost. 721,000 rupees covers the capital costs of the science and computer laboratory. Details can be made available upon request.
